Million Puppet March supports PBS

WASHINGTON, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- Hundreds of people joined a Million Puppet March through Washington Saturday to show support for the Public Broadcasting System.

Many of the marchers dressed as Big Bird, responding to a comment Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney made during a debate, WTOP-FM reported. Romney said he loves Big Bird -- one of the leading Muppet characters on "Sesame Street" -- but did not want to borrow money from China to pay for the children's education program.

The event was billed as non-partisan, although a few marchers expressed support for President Obama along with PBS. Others said the goal was not to demonstrate a political viewpoint.

"I try to keep politics out of it," said Michael Schupbach, a former "Sesame Street" staffer. "I think PBS is a good idea. I'm here to support my friends. How people vote is up to them."
