GREER, S.C., Oct. 15 (UPI) -- A man exchanged gunfire with sheriff's deputies in a Greer, S.C., hostage situation that left a man dead and several people hurt, a sheriff's deputy said.
A child, two deputies and the gunman were among the injured, Master Deputy Laura Campbell said.
Deputies responded Sunday night after a 911 call about a man trying to shoot his way into a house, WHNS-TV, Greenville, reported.
The sheriff's office sent its SWAT team and bomb squad to the scene.
When officers arrived, they faced a standoff, with the gunman holding four adults and two children hostage inside the building, Campbell said.
Deputies entered the house and shots were exchanged, she said.
Deputies said they believed a man found dead inside the house was killed as the gunman tried to enter.
Campbell said several people were injured. The extent of the injuries was not disclosed.
