Family settles bullying lawsuit

CINCINNATI, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A Cincinnati family will get $154,000 from their daughter's school district because officials failed to address bullying that led to the girl's suicide.

Jessica Logan, 18, a senior at Sycamore High School, had become the target of taunting and sneering after nude photos she texted to her boyfriend were shared with other classmates. Logan's parents argued in court papers their daughter's constitutional rights had been violated when school officials failed to address the sexual harassment resulting from the unintended release of personal photos.

Logan hanged herself in July 2008.

Logan family attorney Jennifer Branch said the settlement was fair to both sides and avoided a trial that would have been painful for her clients, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Tuesday. The full amount of the settlement was $220,000 before lawyer fees.

Last year, the Ohio Legislature passed the Jessica Logan Act, which forces school districts to enact policies combating cyberbullying and offer better training for teachers to address the problem.
