Colo. opposes gun control after shooting

DENVER, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- Two months removed from a movie theater shooting that killed 12, Colorado residents overwhelmingly oppose stricter gun laws, polling shows.

A poll conducted by The Denver Post shows residents by a 56 percent-to-39 percent margin say the state should protect the rights of gun owners rather than controlling their purchase.

Men surveyed were nearly twice as likely to support gun ownership rather than gun control. Women were more evenly split on the issue, the poll found.

The poll, conducted by The Post and Survey USA, was roughly in line with national opinions on the issue, the newspaper said.

The issue largely cut along partisan lines, with 79 percent of Republican respondents favoring gun owners' rights and opposing gun control. Just 29 percent of Democrats agreed.

The poll comes weeks after accused gunman James Holmes opened fire in a mass shooting in an Aurora, Colo., movie theater. Holmes is accused of killing 12 people and injuring 58 more.
