Justice Dept. to monitor Wis., Fla. polls

WASHINGTON, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Some sites in the Florida and Wisconsin primaries Tuesday will be monitored to ensure compliance with the 1965 Voting Rights Act, the Justice Department said.

Monitors will be sent to Collier, Hendry, Lee, Osceola and Polk counties in Florida and the city of Milwaukee to ensure language assistance in Spanish is provided, the Justice Department said in a release.

The Voting Rights Act bars discrimination in the election process based on race, color or membership in a minority-language group, Justice said. The act also requires specifically covered jurisdictions to provide language assistance during the election process.
