AURORA, Colo., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- First lady Michelle Obama made a surprise visit to the victims of last month's theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., officials said.
Obama met Saturday with survivors of the July 20 shooting at an Aurora theater in which 12 people were killed and 58 were injured, as well as doctors and nurses helping them recover from their injuries at the Medical Center of Aurora, The Hill reported.
"I just want to make sure everyone here knows that our thoughts and prayers are still with you every single day. And it was amazing to meet some of the staff at the hospital, to just see how they rallied and how they continue to support one another in these times," the first lady said.
The first lady is on a West Coast fundraising tour on behalf of President Obama's reelection campaign.
"But what I remind everybody, because I think it's so important to remember, especially for the people here in this state who have been through so much -- we are doing this because of the values we believe in," Michelle Obama said.
The first lady went on to talk about education funding, national healthcare reform, student loan debt and voting and voter registration.
"So never underestimate your individual power to impact this process. That's what our democracy is about. That could be the difference between waking up on November the 7th and asking ourselves 'could I have done more?' or feeling the promise of four more years," she said.
Afterward, Obama met with Gov. John Hickenlooper, Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan and U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter before leaving the hospital, The Denver Post reported.
