Mizrahi styles Malibu-inspired collection

DETROIT, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- The "incredibly beautiful" 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is the inspiration for a limited-edition Malibu Collection, U.S. fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi says.

Mizrahi, a television personality who paired with Target and is creative director of Liz Claiborne New York sold on QVC, will visit New York, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles during the next few weeks to gather ideas and inspiration for the collection, The Detroit News reported Tuesday.

The collection will be sold in limited quantities on LivingSocial.com.

"I've always kind of been inspired by beautiful objects and I think the car is incredibly beautiful," Mizrahi told the newspaper in a telephone interview.

Mizrahi said his design is still in the concept stage, but the Malibu's exterior lines, taillights and "very sexy" ice-blue ambient interior lighting already struck a chord.

"Our Chevy Malibu customer is very smart, very savvy," Rebecca Waldmeir, lead creative designer for color and trim for Chevrolet passenger cars including the Malibu, told the News. "She doesn't want to sacrifice anything. She wants to indulge a little."

Waldmeir said she looks to the fashion industry when considering colors and trim, explaining that a luxury handbag was the inspiration for interior colors, and the texture and feel of Malibu's leather seats.

"Women play a significant role in who will be purchasing this vehicle," she said. "We just feel that having this collection will connect on a whole other level with them."

The collection debuts for purchase in the fall.
