Catholic school case gets 5 new plaintiffs

CHICAGO, July 31 (UPI) -- A Chicago law firm said five additional claims of sexual abuse have been made against three former Catholic school teachers.

Five more men have filed claims in the bankruptcy case against the Christian Brothers, claiming former teachers Brother Edward Courtney, Brother Robert Brouillette and Brother D.P. Ryan sexually abused them while they attended Christian Brothers schools in Chicago, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The number of claims against the three teachers is now at 27.

Hurley McKenna & Mertz, the law firm representing the 27 victims, said Wednesday is the deadline for alleged sexual abuse victims to file claims in the bankruptcy case.

All civil lawsuits against the Christian Brothers are suspended until the conclusion of the bankruptcy trial. Hurley McKenna & Mertz partner Mark McKenna said his clients may file lawsuits once the bankruptcy trial ends.
