Death row inmate apparently kills self

AUSTIN, Texas, July 26 (UPI) -- An Austin, Texas, murderer who was to be executed died from an apparent overdose of pills he is believed to have hoarded, prison officials said.

Authorities said Wednesday Selwyn Davis, 30, was found unconscious in his cell Friday evening during a security check and was pronounced dead at Livingston Memorial Hospital, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

The official cause of death was not immediately determined but officials speculated he overdosed on pills he had hoarded in his cell.

Davis was sentenced to death for murdering his girlfriend's mother after he beat his girlfriend, threatened to light her on fire, cut his uncle with a knife, stole a car, went on a drug binge and sexually assaulted a teenage girl in a two day period.
