Report: Monica Conyers has large debts

DETROIT, July 20 (UPI) -- Monica Conyers, the imprisoned wife of Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., owes thousands of dollars, her husband reported Friday on a disclosure form.

The debts might explain why the former Detroit City Council president needed a government-paid lawyer for an appeal after she pleaded guilty to bribery, the Detroit Free Press reported. Monica Conyers is now serving a 37-month sentence and has abandoned her efforts to reverse her guilty plea.

The congressman reported that his wife owes between $15,001 and $50,000 for charges made at the luxury department store Neiman Marcus. She owes between $50,001 and $100,000 on school loans.

Monica Conyers had to file an affidavit on her finances to qualify for a court-appointed lawyer. That affidavit has not been released.

Her husband makes $174,000 a year as a congressman. He has generally remained aloof from his wife's legal problems and there is no evidence he offered to pay for a lawyer.
