Weiner brushes off talk of campaigning now

NEW YORK, July 19 (UPI) -- Former New York congressman Anthony Weiner has dismissed talk of a political comeback, at least for the time being.

Weiner resigned in from Congress in disgrace last summer following a scandal over the discovery that he was sending lewd pictures to women on the Internet.

New York media, citing friends and other knowledgeable sources, reported that Weiner was mulling another political run, CBS News reported Wednesday.

In a recent interview with People magazine, scheduled to hit newsstands Friday, Weiner dismissed the notion that he's considering a run for outgoing New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's job.

"I can't say absolutely that I will never run for public office again, but I'm very happy in my present life. I'm not doing anything to plan a campaign," Weiner told People.

Weiner, who was joined in the interview by his wife, Huma Abedin, deputy chief of staff to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said he was more focused on raising his son than replaying his political downfall.

"I've had enormous regrets about what I put Huma through, how I let my constituents down," he told People. "But it's not like I sit all day replaying it through my mind. With a baby, it is pretty easy to put things into perspective."
