WASHINGTON, May 22 (UPI) -- President Obama proclaimed May 22 "National Maritime Day," honoring the Merchant Marine Service and its history, in a statement released Tuesday.

The proclamation mentioned "privateers who bravely fought for independence to mariners who have supported our armed forces for over two centuries," as well as the modern maritime industry that "sustains the robust domestic and international trade networks."
