WASHINGTON, May 19 (UPI) -- American actor Noah Wyle said his 9-year-old son was proud the former "ER" star was arrested for a protest against Medicaid cuts in Washington.

Police arrested Wyle April 23 as he protested with disability advocacy group ADEPT, People reported. When he was released from jail, he said he called his son Owen to explain the incident.

"I did talk to my son after I got released early the next morning," Wyle, 40, told People. "I called him before school, and I explained what happened and that I was OK."

Wyle said he "kind of explained it in as simple terms as possible, and I thought I was going on a little bit too long and I may have lost him, but as soon as I stopped talking, he just jumped in and said, 'I think you did the right thing, Dad.' "

Wyle said his son's reaction brought tears to his eyes.

The actor is scheduled to appear in a Washington court Tuesday for the incident.
