MINEOLA, N.Y., May 9 (UPI) -- Former major league baseball player Rusty Torres pleaded innocent Wednesday to charges he molested a young girl in a New York City suburb.
Attorney Scott Corrigan said Torres, who has been a youth coach in Oyster Bay on Long Island for about 10 years, denies any wrongdoing, the New York Daily News reported.
"He's upset and disturbed," Corrigan said. "These allegations seem out of character and came out of nowhere."
Torres was released on $50,000 bail.
A police report alleges Torres admitted he became sexually stimulated by watching the little girl on a pull-up bar. He also allegedly said he helped her down from the equipment and then took her into the back of a van.
"I brought her to the back of my van and I don't want to talk about what happened there but at one point I accidentally exposed my erect penis," the report quotes him as saying.
The girl reportedly told police Torres rubbed his erect, clothed penis against her.
Torres, 63, played nine seasons in the majors, starting as a rookie with the New York Yankees in 1971 and moving on to the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, California Angels and Kansas City Royals.
The town of Oyster Bay has suspended him without pay. Corrigan said his client has a "stellar reputation" for his work with children.
