SANDUSKY, Ohio, April 25 (UPI) -- An alleged hit man for Mexico's most powerful drug cartel lived in a popular vacation spot along Lake Erie for 10 years before his arrest, an official said.
Edgar Campos-Barraza, who uses the alias "El Cholo," was arrested Jan. 5 in Sandusky, Ohio, CNN reported.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release identifies Campos as an alleged assassin for the Sinaloa Cartel.
Border Patrol spokesman Geoffrey Ramer said information about Campos' arrest was not released until his extradition to Mexico had been completed.
Ramer said there was no indication other cartel operatives had been operating in the Sandusky area, home to the Cedar Point amusement park.
He said the Interstate-80-90 corridor is "an active narcotics area."
The Mexican government had given U.S. law enforcement a tip about the whereabouts of Campos.
An arrest warrant issued by the Mexican government charged Campos with "aggravated kidnapping and criminal conspiracy" and he was a suspect in the murder of a state police officer in Baja California, Mexico, CNN said.
