OAKLAND, Calif., April 4 (UPI) -- The man accused of a shooting spree at a small Oakland, Calif., college in which seven people died was charged Wednesday with multiple counts of murder.
Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O'Malley charged One Goh, 43, a former nursing student, with seven counts of murder and attempting to murder three others Monday morning at Oikos University, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The newspaper said O'Malley, by alleging multiple counts of murder, has the option of seeking the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole if the case goes to trial.
Goh also was accused of robbery, carjacking and kidnapping, among other charges.
He is accused of kidnapping a 24-year-old college employee from Oakland who was killed, and carjacking a 38-year-old student from San Francisco, who was killed in the university parking lot, the Chronicle said.
Protected by a large security detail, Goh was arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland. CNN reported Goh, dressed in a red jump suit, was expressionless as a judge explained the charges. The judge also told him he would not get bail.
Memorial services were held Tuesday at a Baptist church in Oakland, Calif., and a Tibetan center in nearby Richmond for the victims.
Both services were attended by people of many faiths, the Chronicle reported. Tenzin Tsedup Wangdu, president of the Tibetan Association of Northern California, was at both.
"This is a tragedy, but we all must unite as a community and teach compassion for all human beings," he said.
Oikos Vice President Woo Nam Soo said the university, run by a Korean Christian church, has a mission of helping immigrants in the Bay Area. The school originally had only a ministry program.
Goh had enrolled in the nursing program in an effort to get his life back on track, the Oakland Tribune reported. He was recently divorced and deep in debt to the Internal Revenue Service, landlords and credit card companies.
But he was expelled last year and was apparently angry the $6,000 he had paid in tuition was not refunded.
At least one former boss said Goh had problems with his temper. The owner of an Asian food warehouse told the Tribune he fired Goh from a delivery job because he had arguments with the customers, the Tribune reported.
