Teacher resigns over cleavage remark

EUSTIS, Fla., March 29 (UPI) -- A Florida middle school math teacher resigned her position after remarking on the exposed cleavage of a student.

Joan Bannister, 53, a teacher at Eustis Middle School in Eustis, Fla., pointed out the girl's cleavage before the classroom, mentioning the girl could be found violating the school dress code if she was measured, a memo from Lake County Schools said.

The girl filed a complaint, claiming Bannister approached her with a ruler to measure her exposed "boobage."

The memo states Bannister denied using the term, but spoke with the girl about dress code compliance and admitted she "could have handled the situation better."

Bannister requested a hearing to address a five-day suspension the School District recommended, but resigned Monday, and School District spokesman Chris Patton said the complaint will be directed to the State Office of Professional Practices.
