Ex-Tea Party spokesman cleared in rape

SAN DIEGO, March 29 (UPI) -- San Diego prosecutors say they've dropped kidnapping and rape charges against a former spokesman for the San Diego Tea Party after the alleged victim recanted.

Michael Kobulnicky was arrested last week and accused of assaulting a woman he had picked up in his car last month. The alleged victim said Monday that Kobulnicky was not the culprit.

The San Diego County District Attorney's office said the woman later told prosecutors she had not been kidnapped or assaulted.

Kobulnicky, who teared up during Thursday's court hearing in San Diego, was expected to be processed out of jail later in the day, KNSD-TV in San Diego said.

Kobulnicky, 54, was described by KNSD as a one-time spokesman for the Tea Party in San Diego and a leader of the local Mormon Church. He is a landscaper by trade.
