Missing fingers of child found in trash

HONOLULU, March 13 (UPI) -- Honolulu police say they're searching for a young girl after a woman found six fingers of a child inside a plastic bag in a trash bin.

Gina Rose Vendegna said she found the fingers Feb. 2 while looking for bottles and cans she searches for to have them recycled or give them to elderly people, KHON-TV, Honolulu, reported.

"I saw a plastic Ziploc bag [containing what] I thought were ginger root starting to dry out. I'm a gardener, and I recycle, and I thought I'd be able restore them. So I threw them in my purse," Vendegna said.

But when she arrived home, she spotted fingernails and called police.

She said the fingers had been preserved in the sealed plastic bag.

Based on lab results, police say they believe the fingers belonged to a girl approximately age 2 1/2- 4 years old.

Police have checked missing-persons cases and questioned employees at hospitals as well as area residents but have no leads on the girl's identity or how she lost her fingers, KHON said.

Vendegna is not a suspect, police said.
