MONTESANO, Wash., March 10 (UPI) -- Police said they arrested a suspect in the stabbing of a judge and a sheriff's deputy in a Washington state courthouse after the suspect's mother turned him in.
Grays Harbor Undersheriff Rick Scott said officers arrested Steven Kravetz, 34, around 1:30 p.m. PST Saturday after his mother, Roberta Dougherty, called authorities and said he was at her home. Dougherty made the call after police released a photo of her and her son, The Seattle Times reported.
The Grays Harbor Sheriff's said arresting officers recovered a handgun belonging to Deputy Polly Davin, who was stabbed in the Friday attack.
The arrest followed a massive search during which Montesano, the seat of Grays Harbor County, was effectively in lockdown, the newspaper said. Police said the attacker stabbed Davin at around noon Friday and when Superior Court Judge David Edwards, 63, rushed to help her he was also injured.
Kravetz allegedly grabbed Davin's .45-caliber sidearm and rushed out of the building.
Scott had said Davin, who had received a report of a suspicious person in the courthouse, asked the man his name and was told it was Michael Thomas. He then stabbed her with what was believed to be a small knife or pair of scissors.
Police arrested a man named Michael Thomas 2 hours later and then determined he was not the assailant.
The Grays Harbor County Courts sued the county commissioners in December over security in the courthouse. In legal papers, court officials said the county, a thinly populated area along the Pacific coast, is the only one in Washington with more than one judge that does not have courthouse entrances secured, the newspaper said.
