Lottery winner collected food stamps

DETROIT, March 8 (UPI) -- The mother of a Michigan woman who accepted food stamps after winning $1 million in the state lottery says her daughter's situation is "nobody's business."

Euline Clayton of Lincoln Park, Mich. told The Detroit News "I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, but it's nobody's business if she's not breaking the law."

Until recently Clayton's daughter Amanda Clayton, 24, was receiving $200 a month in food stamps to feed herself and her two children.

The single mother won $1 million in the Michigan lottery in September and selected a lump sum of $700,000 after taxes.

Late Wednesday, the Michigan Department of Human Services said Clayton is no longer getting food stamps after department officials removed her from the program.

State Rep. Dale Zorn got the Michigan House of Representatives to pass legislation that would throw lump-sum lottery winners off welfare rolls.

The measure is currently pending in the Michigan Senate.

Euline Clayton said until the legislation becomes law what her daughter did was legal.

"People need to leave her alone," Euline Clayton said.
