Rape torture trial opens in Texas

WEATHERFORD, Texas, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- A Texas man charged with aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping used a deer rack to torture a 62-year-old woman for days, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Lawyers for Jeff Maxwell, 59, of Corsicana did not make an opening statement as his trial opened, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram reported. He has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors also played audiotapes of the alleged victim's and Maxwell's first interviews with investigators. Maxwell said he had not seen the woman for years but a few minutes later she emerged from his front door, police said.

The woman said Maxwell kidnapped her in March from her home in Parker County, west of Fort Worth, and drove her to Corsicana, about 50 miles south of Dallas. He allegedly kept her chained to his bed for 12 days.

Jurors viewed photos taken inside Maxwell's home that included the deer rack, a chain fastened to his bed and sex toys.
