Conn. marshal facing marijuana charges

NORWALK, Conn., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A Connecticut state marshal was arrested on felony drug possession charges after police said they found about five ounces of marijuana in his trunk.

Alan Freedman, 58, of Norwalk was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, illegal distribution of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school, the Stamford Advocate reported.

He was freed after posting $10,000 bond.

Freedman was pulled over Tuesday after running a red light and a routine search by a police dog called to the scene detected marijuana, Patrol Sgt. David O'Connor said.

Police said a search yielded 4.8 ounces marijuana in two plastic bags and a small plastic container, digital scales, nine pipes with marijuana residue, a bag of marijuana seeds and empty baggies.

State Marshal Commission Administrative Manager Doug Rinaldi said he knew of the arrest and was looking into it.

Freedman works as a marshal in Fairfield County, the State Marshal Commission's Web site indicates.

The marshals are hired by attorneys, the state, businesses and others to serve notices of civil court proceedings and enforce collection of judgments. They are not state employees and are governed by the commission.
