3 suspects arrested in fatal beating

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Three suspects were in custody Friday and facing charges of killing a young man who was savagely beaten in Philadelphia's Old City neighborhood, police said.

A police source told The Philadelphia Inquirer at least one of the men had confessed to the attack on Kevin Kless, 23, who died Jan. 14, hours after he was beaten.

Investigators said Kless, his girlfriend and another young woman had just left a restaurant early Saturday morning and were trying to catch a cab. Kless yelled at a cab driver who refused to take them, apparently angering men in a nearby car who thought he was talking to them.

The assault was shocking because it occurred in a busy neighborhood within a few blocks of Independence Hall. The beating occurred in front of a historic building, the Second Bank of the United States.

Kless, a native of Warwick, N.Y., graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia. He started a new job in the city six weeks before his death after working in Harrisburg, Pa.

His family held a memorial service Friday in Warwick.
