Icelandair fined for bad ads

WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- The U.S. Transportation Department Wednesday fined Icelandair $50,000 for deceptive price advertising.

The DOT said Icelandair last fall ran Internet advertisements for flights to Iceland and Europe for $429 but failed to provide required information about any additional taxes on that Web page.

"When consumers book a flight, they have the right to know the full amount they will have to pay," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a release. "We adopted our price advertising rules to protect consumers and will take enforcement action when they are violated."

Icelandair had included an asterisk next to the advertised price but without the tax information. Potential customers had to click on the fare, which took them to the airline's homepage where they had to select a route before being taken to another page where tax and fee information was disclosed.
