7-year-old dead in Brooklyn fire

NEW YORK, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A three-alarm fire gutted two New York homes early Sunday, killing a 7-year-old boy and injuring seven others, officials said.

Officials said did not immediately identify the young boy killed in the 1:40 a.m. fire or release an official cause for the blaze.

A passerby told the New York Post he watched as a man ran from the burning building with his son in his arms -- he believed the boy to be dead.

"He was crying a whole bunch. He put his son in a car nearby while the ambulances showed up," Johnny Pache said.

Seven people were injured, including children and one man who was listed in critical condition.

"We woke up and we see smoke everywhere, black smoke. So we ran. We don't know how it started or even if it was on our floor. My son was in the ambulance. He inhaled some smoke. He'll be fine," said a woman who declined to give her name.
