GRAND MARAIS, Minn., Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A man accused of shooting three people in a Minnesota courthouse has died in a Duluth hospital after suffering "flu-like symptoms," police said.
Daniel Schlienz, 42, a former boxer, had just been convicted of sexual assault when the shooting occurred Dec. 15 at the Cook County Courthouse in Grand Marais. Cook County Attorney Tim Scannell and another victim were hospitalized, and a third person was treated and released.
Schlienz died Tuesday after being hospitalized Monday night, the Duluth News Tribune reported.
Schlienz told authorities Sunday night he was sick but Sheriff Ross Litman told the newspaper he did not receive immediate medical attention.
"Given the hour of the day and the holiday, medical staff were not in the facility," Litman said. "When they arrived on the morning of the 26th, he was seen and treated for flu-like symptoms."
Litman said Schlienz had experienced nausea, vomiting and body aches, and was taken to Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center Monday after his condition grew worse.
After conducting an autopsy, the St. Louis County Medical Examiner's Office said the cause and manner of death was "undetermined" pending further tests, the newspaper said. The sheriff said foul play was not suspected.
Schlienz entered an Alford plea to sexual assault in 2006, conceding there was enough evidence to convict him without admitting guilt. A year later, he filed a motion to withdraw the plea, and an appeals court ruled in January that he could do so.
A jury returned a guilty verdict Thursday afternoon, the report said. Scannell was the prosecutor at the trial.
