BALTIMORE, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- A jury in Baltimore found Thursday school officials were not negligent in their handling of complaints of bullying aimed at a brain-damaged boy.
The verdict came after a four-day trial, The Baltimore Sun reported. Jurors began deliberations late Wednesday.
Edmund and Shawna Sullivan sought $1.3 million in damages. They said their son, now 10, who suffered a traumatic injury at the hands of a relative when he was a baby, was bullied by other students at two elementary schools, Glenmount and Hazelwood, and that school officials failed to deal with the situation.
During closing arguments, their lawyer acknowledged they had not complained in writing.
A lawyer for the school district said the alleged effect of the bullying was actually a result of the boy's original injury.
A judge dismissed nine of the 13 counts in the Sullivans' lawsuit Wednesday before deliberations began.
