LAS VEGAS, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- A Nevada district court judge says he will rule by the end of the week on the legality of an initiative petition seeking to ban abortions in Nevada.
District Judge James Wilson heard arguments Tuesday on whether Nevada Pro Life supporters could begin collecting signatures for their petition, the Las Vegas Sun reported.
A suit to stop the petition from being circulated was filed by six Nevadans represented by the American Civil Liberties Union.
If Wilson rules the petition can go forward, backers of the initiative must gather 72,352 signatures to qualify the issue for the next election.
ACLU attorney Alexa Kolbi Molinas told Wilson the petition violates a law that there can be only one subject in any initiative seeking to amend the Nevada Constitution.
"They are rolling many issues into a simple initiative making a number of changes," Molinas said.
The language isn't clear, she said, because the petition "does not spell out the consequences" if the initiative is passed.
