Atheists want spot next to Nativity scene

MADISON, Wis., Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Atheists say they want a permit to set up a display next to the Nativity scene under the Wisconsin Capitol dome in Madison.

Annie Laurie Gaylor of the Freedom from Religion Foundation said her group doesn't think a Nativity scene belongs in Wisconsin's Capitol. "It's the seat of state government and everybody should feel welcome there," she told WISC-TV, Madison.

Julaine Appling of Wisconsin Family Action, which funded the Nativity display, said the rotunda is already dotted with displays of other religious traditions from last week's Interfaith Awareness Week.

"I think it's time for all of us to realize there's a lot of room for different voices," she said.

Gaylor declined to provide details of the proposed atheist display but said it would be "slightly blasphemous, an irreverent tweak on the Nativity scene," the television station reported Monday.
