Boy, 10, steals truck and goes on joy ride

EATONVILLE, Fla., Nov. 17 (UPI) -- A 10-year-old boy broke into the Eatonville, Fla., impound lot, stole a truck and went for a joy ride, police say.

The boy, whose name was not released, scaled a 10-foot chain-link fence at the city impound lot around 3 p.m. Wednesday, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

He then got into a white pickup truck and drove through the fence, police Sgt. Eric McIntyre said.

Police later received a call from someone who noticed a child driving the truck. When police caught up to the boy, he put the truck into reverse to evade them, drove a couple blocks and crashed into a light pole, McIntyre said.

An electric wire fell, setting a nearby house on fire, McIntyre said. Firefighters put out the flames and there were no serious injuries.

The boy fled the scene but police caught and handcuffed him about a block away.

The boy was charged with burglary of a conveyance, grand theft of a motor vehicle and resisting arrest, and was taken to the Orange County Juvenile Assessment Center.

Investigators are trying to determine how the 10-year-old got the key and started the truck, which sustained $4,000 in damage.
