Winter blizzard blasts Colorado

DENVER, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Hurricane-force winds and heavy snowfall were making travel dangerous in Colorado Sunday, AccuWeather.com reported.

The storm system blasting the region brought winds as high as 113 mph in Berthoud Pass, the report said. That would constitute a Category 3 hurricane.

State officials closed Route 287 Sunday morning and mandated chains on tires of commercial vehicles on Interstate 70 because of the high snow levels, the report said.

Higher elevations in the Rocky Mountains were experiencing a condition called thunder snow, in which as much as 3 inches of snow falls in an hour.

The storm has already unloaded more than a foot of snow in Idaho and Wyoming this week. The system is moving south and is forecast to continue dumping snow on the Northwest for several days, the report said.

There were no reports of storm-related deaths or injuries from the storm.
