ATLANTA, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- A second trial for a jaywalking Georgia mother convicted in the hit-and-run death of her 4-year-old son has been postponed until November, authorities said.
Raquel Nelson of Marietta, Ga. was scheduled to go on trial Tuesday but the proceedings were postponed because Nelson's pro-bono defense attorney is involved in another case, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
A new trial date has been set for Nov. 28 in Cobb County State Court.
Nelson's son, A.J. Newman, was killed in April 2010 when he was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street with his mother.
The driver of the car, Jerry Lee Guy, pleaded guilty and received a six-month jail sentence.
Nelson was convicted of vehicular homicide, reckless conduct and jaywalking by a Cobb County jury.
At the time of her sentencing, State Court Judge Katherine Tanksley offered Nelson a choice between a second trial or a year's probation.
She opted for a new trial that was set to begin on Tuesday.
