Detroit settles fondling case

DETROIT, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Detroit has agreed to pay $650,000 to a former school superintendent who says she was fired after reporting the school board president for sexual misconduct.

The settlement between Teresa Gueyser and the Detroit Public Schools includes no admission of wrongdoing, The Detroit News reported Friday. A judge approved the agreement, which includes confidentiality provisions, last month.

Gueyser was effectively fired in 2010 when Robert Bobb, the emergency manager at the time, stopped funding her position. In her lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court, she said she was dismissed in retaliation for reporting that Otis Mathis, president of the school board at the time, fondled himself during a one-on-one meeting.

Mathis pleaded guilty last year to misconduct in office and received a probationary sentence.

Elena Herrada, a school board member, said Gueyser should not take the money at a time when there are 37 children in a class.

"This is $650,000 to someone who didn't earn it," Herrada said. "This is nothing personally against her. She knows the situation in Detroit. To take the money is unconscionable."
