Death of disabled girl ruled a homicide

DAYTON, Ohio, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- An Ohio coroner's office has ruled the death of a disabled 14-year-old girl who weighed 28 pounds at the time of her death a homicide, officials said.

The Montgomery County Coroner's Office made the ruling in the death of Makayla Norman, who suffered from cerebral palsy, the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News reported Tuesday.

Medics were called to a home in Dayton March 1 and rushed the girl to Miami Valley Hospital where she died minutes after arriving, police said.

With an autopsy and laboratory tests completed, the coroner ruled the death a homicide in early September and detectives focused their investigation on suspects.

"We believe one or more individuals were involved, and we are working with the prosecutors on the appropriate charges," Dayton Sgt. Dan Mauch said.

Montgomery County Department of Jobs & Family Services said Children's Services had a referral on the family in December 2009 but had been unable to substantiate any of the neglect allegations, the newspaper reported.

Children's Service opened a case on the family after the girl's death and has temporary custody of her 18-year-old sister, spokeswoman Ann Stevens said.
