Charter boat abandons divers at sea

MIAMI, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- A deep-sea diver says he and another man were abandoned in the waters off Key Biscayne Fla., by the charter boat hired to take them out to sea.

Paul Kline, 44, a certified deep-sea diver from Texas, said he and Fernando Garcia Puerta, of Spain, were with a large group that went out Sunday on a boat owned by Miami Beach-based RJ Diving Ventures, the Miami Herald reported.

Kline said the $85 trip included two one-hour dives at different sites. The two men surfaced about 55 minutes into the second dive and found the boat was gone. They held on to a fishing buoy for more than two hours until they were rescued by a yacht heading back to Miami from Key Largo.

The captain of the dive boat had no comment on how he lost the two men, the newspaper said. The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating.
