Recall of Ariz. Senate president advances

PHOENIX, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- The Arizona Supreme Court refused Tuesday to bar a recall election for state Senate President Russell Pearce.

The ruling leaves Pearce without any apparent legal maneuvers to challenge the recall. The high court dismissed arguments by Pearce's lawyer challenging the validity of the petitions submitted by Citizens for a Better Arizona, The Arizona Republic reported.

Pearce, a Republican, was elected to the state Senate in 2000 from a Phoenix-area district after serving as head of the state Division of Motor Vehicles. He left the DMV amid a scandal involving two of his subordinates found to have altered a woman's driving record.

Recall supporters said Pearce appears fixated on legislation aimed at illegal immigrants and at gun rights while the district needs jobs and healthcare.

Two candidates, both Republicans, have submitted petitions to run in the recall election Nov. 8. Neither has yet been certified as a candidate.
