Teen to be tried as adult in murder case

GALVESTON, Texas, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A Texas teenager charged with killing an 84-year-old woman when he was 14 is to be tried as an adult.

A judge certified Jordan Lewis as an adult last week, The Daily News of Galveston reported. Lewis, who turned 15 last week, is being held without bail in the Galveston County Jail, where officials said he has been segregated from adult inmates.

Vaneeda Wright was found stabbed in her home in La Marque on May 29. Lewis was arrested two days later, and police said they have a strong case, including palm prints found in Wright's house and witnesses who saw him there.

Lewis could face life with no parole if convicted as an adult. Under a 2005 U.S. Supreme Court decision, people convicted of crimes committed under the age of 18 cannot be sentenced to death.
