EL PASO, Texas, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- A female tiger killed her mate in their exhibit compound at the El Paso, Texas, zoo, officials said.

Zoo workers said the female Malaysian tiger named Seri and her mate Wzui had been seen playing with each other and being affectionate before Seri turned on Wzui and killed him about 4 p.m. Thursday, the El Paso Times reported.

Three-year-old Seri arrived at the zoo about 15 months ago, while Wzui, who was six, came to the facility about nine months ago.

The two specimens of the endangered species had been brought to the zoo in hopes they would mate, zoo officials said.
