Psych evaluation for carjacking suspect

ROCKVILLE, Md., July 23 (UPI) -- A Baltimore man suspected of a violent carjacking will be evaluated to determine whether he is fit to stand trial, a judge said Friday.

Terron White, 22, who is being held without bail, has already been seen by one psychiatrist, The Baltimore Sun reported. At a hearing in Montgomery County District Court, Judge Eugene Wolfe ordered that White be sent to a secure psychiatric facility for additional evaluation.

White allegedly got into a fight at a Baltimore gas station July 13 and then took off in a Lexus with a woman and her toddler son inside. He ended up on the Capital Beltway in Bethesda, Md., where the woman escaped by jumping from the car, holding her son.

White was arrested and charged with kidnapping, theft of the car and assault.

At the hearing, White, who appeared via a video link, told the judge he was "good" and seemed reluctant to go to a hospital.

If psychiatrists find White is incapable of assisting in his defense, he would be held in a secure facility.
