Deputies bust large pot farm

VENTURA, Calif., July 19 (UPI) -- The Ventura County (Calif.) Sheriff's Department says officers raided the largest marijuana farm ever in their district in the Los Padres National Forest.

The deputies have destroyed more than 100,000 pot plants since the discovery last week of the outdoor growing organization in the Pine Mountain area, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

Investigators found several large pieces of land used for the cultivation of marijuana -- complete with irrigation hoses spread throughout the hillside -- along with fertilizer, pesticides and poisons at each plot.

When investigators were airlifted to other parts of the mountain, they found campsites with tents, propane stoves, sleeping bags, fertilizers, pesticides apparently used by growers, and "an enormous amount of trash" left behind.

Sheriff officials say they also found a 9mm handgun, a .22 caliber rifle and ammunition for a variety of other handguns and rifles.

No arrests had been made.
