Teachers furious over executives' raises

CHICAGO, June 23 (UPI) -- More than 1,000 Chicago school teachers protested mere hours before the Board of Education voted to raise administrators' salaries.

Teachers were informed last week that the schools do not have the funds to cover their 4 percent raises.

New Chicago schools Chief Executive Officer Jean-Claude Brizard will be paid $250,000 per year, will be eligible for as much as $37,500 in performance bonuses and will receive $30,000 to move his family from Rochester, N.Y., and a free car and driver for professional purposes, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Brizard's base salary is $20,000 higher than that of Ron Huberman, Brizard's predecessor, the Sun-Times reported.

School Board President David Vitale said the salary is "competitive and appropriate.''

Three other new CPS executives will receive salaries approximately $35,000 higher than their predecessors' salaries, the newspaper reported.

"They are giving raises to administrators but not to teachers. We deserve it. What have they done to prove they deserve it? They have done nothing ... . It's outrageous," said Patricia Boughton, a Harlan High School teacher, as she protested Wednesday with the others outside the Board of Education building.
