Joplin tornado death toll reaches 141

JOPLIN, Mo., June 5 (UPI) -- The death toll from the Joplin, Mo., tornado rose to 141 Sunday with the deaths of three more victims, city officials said.

The Kansas City Star also reported federal officials have determined nearly 6,100 homes were damaged by the EF-5 twister that roared through the Missouri town May 22.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says more than $9.5 million has been dedicated to help Joplin residents recover from the devastation.

The newspaper said Joplin officials say volunteers have put in more than 55,000 hours of work helping clean up the debris but more help will be needed through the summer to complete the task.
