Commuter jets almost collide in Chicago

CHICAGO, May 19 (UPI) -- Two commuter jets came within 300 feet of colliding at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, airport officials said.

The incident involved a pair of 50-seat, twin-engine commuter jets, one taking off for Buffalo, the other inbound from Muskegon, Mich., The Washington Post reported.

The arrival of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's plane may have contributed to confusion surrounding Monday's incident although Biden's plane was not directly involved.

Officials said if a controller supervisor had not stepped in, it is likely the two commuter jets would have collided.

The supervisor ordered a SkyWest Airlines Canadair jet with 29 people aboard to abort its landing to avoid an ExpressJet Airlines Embraer ERJ-145 with 53 people aboard that was rolling down a runway preparing to take off.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Sasha J. Johnson said the FAA would "review the event to see if any additional training or procedural changes might be necessary."

The National Transportation Safety Board said it would also investigate the incident.

Biden and his wife, Jill, were in Chicago for the inauguration of former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel as Chicago mayor.
