Yale fraternity suspended for 5 years

NEW HAVEN, Conn., May 17 (UPI) -- A Yale University fraternity has been virtually banned from the Ivy League campus for five years for abusive pledge activities, the school said Tuesday.

Yale College Dean Mary Miller alerted students and faculty via e-mail by about the sanctions invoked against Delta Kappa Epsilon by the university executive committee.

In a statement posted on its Web site, the university said the fraternity was being punished for "harassment, coercion or intimidation" and "imperiling the integrity and values of the university community."

The committee also issued penalties to individual DKE members for the same violations, the school said.

Under the sanctions, DKE is not allowed to hold any fraternity activities on campus, including recruitment, for the five years. It also is banned from communicating with Yale students by means of Yale bulletin boards or e-mail, and it has extremely limited use of the Yale name.

The fraternity will be allowed to apply as a campus organization once the five-year ban expires.

The Yale Daily News reported that last Oct. 13 DKE pledges were instructed to chant phrases such as "No means yes, yes means anal" while on campus. The incident was deemed the "last straw" in a series of episodes involving the fraternity, the student newspaper said.
