Sentencing delayed in microwaved baby case

DAYTON, Ohio, May 17 (UPI) -- An Ohio judge ordered a psychiatric exam for a woman convicted of killing her baby daughter in a microwave oven.

Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Mary Wiseman postponed the sentencing phase of China Arnold's trial until Thursday, the Dayton Daily News reported. Jurors found Arnold guilty of aggravated murder Friday, and the sentencing phase had been scheduled to begin Monday.

Arnold's lawyers requested the examination.

The trial was Arnold's third. The first ended in a mistrial when new evidence was produced while it was under way, and she was convicted at the second and given a life sentence. That verdict was overturned on appeal.

Arnold, 31, was found guilty of putting her 28-day-old daughter, Paris Talley, into a microwave in her Dayton apartment and turning it on.
