Missouri firetrucks collide; five injured

PLATTE CITY, Mo., May 9 (UPI) -- Five firefighters were seriously injured in the head-on collision of two firetrucks in a rural area of Missouri's Platte County, authorities said.

The collision occurred as the trucks from the volunteer Central Platte Fire Protection District were responding to a report of an electrical fire at a residence near Platte City Monday morning, The Kansas City Star reported.

One of the firetrucks had missed the driveway to the house because of darkness, turned around and was headed back toward the house when it collided with the other truck, Capt. Erik Holland with the Platte County Sheriff's Department said.

One firefighter was flown to a hospital and the others were transported by ambulance, Holland said.

The injuries were not thought to be life threatening, he said.

Both trucks were severely damaged.

Firefighters from another protection district responded to a mutual aid call and extinguished the electrical fire, the Star reported.
