TELFERNER, Texas, May 6 (UPI) -- A 4-year-old Texas boy was shot to death this week while he and his brother were playing with a rifle in their home, Victoria County investigators said.
The child was struck in the abdomen by a shot from a bolt-action rifle his 5-year-old brother was handling in a back room of their home outside Telferner.
Sheriff's deputies said the boys' parents were home at the time of the shooting Wednesday night. The names of the family members were not released.
"We're still in the preliminary stages of the investigation," chief deputy Terry Simons told the Victoria (Texas) Advocate in a report published Friday.
The newspaper said deputies wanted more information on why the children were not being supervised more closely.
