Girl, 5, steers car after dad blacks out

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., May 4 (UPI) -- A 5-year-old girl seized the wheel of her father's car after he passed out, Jacksonville, Fla., authorities say.

Mark Jackson Jr.'s 2010 Camaro crossed over a lane, ran over a curb and crashed into a sign in a parking lot at 6:50 p.m. Monday, the Florida Times-Union reported.

No one was seriously injured, but the girl's nose and lip were bleeding when police arrived.

Stephanie Bailey, 19, said she nearly hit the car when it careened in front of her.

Bailey found the father and the girl locked in the car and got the girl to open the door. The girl told her she was trying to steer off the road.

When police arrived, Jackson, 40, was unresponsive and staring at the ceiling, the Duval County Sheriff's Office reported. He later said he had taken Xanax and oxycodone.

A relative came to get the girl.

Jackson was charged with driving under the influence while accompanied by a minor, among other counts, and was jailed in lieu of $3,000 bail.
