Toddler allegedly shoots, kills mom

MIRAMAR, Fla., April 27 (UPI) -- A Florida woman allegedly was shot and killed accidentally by her toddler son, who had picked up his father's handgun, police said.

Tania Rues, a spokeswoman for the Miramar Police, said the father, whose name has not been released, could face a negligence charge, CNN reported. Julia Bennett, 33, who was not married to her son's father, died after being shot in the back April 20.

"What we do know is that last Wednesday, shortly after 7 o'clock, we received a 911 call from a gentleman stating that his 2-1/2-year-old son accidentally shot his mother -- the boy's mother," Rues said.

Investigators were planning to question the boy, but Rues said they did not expect to learn much.

The father dialed 911 after the shooting.

"My son picked it up and I tried to grab it," he told a dispatcher. "Oh God, I can't believe this."
